Musselburgh won the Brown Cup this afternoon at a baking hot Broxburn Park in front of a big crowd. It is fair to say that it wasn't the best match of the season but for the Burgh they certainly won't be bothered, indeed it is a sign of a good team that can still win when they don't play to their full potential. Credit though to the players for a gritty battling performance and they did enough to merit winning the game.
The opening exchanges were good with both teams settling on a tricky surface, Chris King hitting a shot just over and Scott Brown went a bit closer for Bo'ness. Musselburgh displayed moments of class when a super move involving Devlin and Murphy who gave Matti King a 1- 2 and just as Murphy was about to shot Fullerton tackled well. A Chris King corner was headed narrowly over by Scott Devlin minutes later as Musselburgh tried to find a goal another two King corners were well cleared by the Bo'ness defense. Five minutes before half time and Musselburgh were reduced to ten men following a straight red card.
The second half saw Musselburgh come out guns blazing, good moves involving Tansey and Matti King gave the Burgh a corner, Chris Kings cross ended up at Tansey who struck a first time shot inches wide. A Bo'ness corner was tipped out by McPherson to Tansey who ran 50 yards before passing to Matti King who hit a solid drive which was well saved by Stalker in goal. Bo'ness had their first shot on target from a cross come shot which was smartly tipped over by the Burgh keeper. The game then went to penalty kicks with the Musselburgh keeper Ronnie McPherson the hero saving 3 Bo'ness penalties leaving Matti King to step us to send the Burgh fans home happy and the trophy to Olivebank.
To review it seems a long time ago that we were standing in the pouring rain at Dunbar but that 5-1 win there has set us up in this competition. Followed by wins over Super league giants and Scottish Cup winners Bathgate and last years Scottish cup winners Linlithgow. To then beat the league winners in the final was superb and the players and mangement deserve all the credit. Whats more there is now less pressure on Tuesday night as with a cup in the bag they can finish the season on a real high. This win was more about the run they have had to get there, tough and hard Musselburgh have shown that they can beat anyone and after today they have added a bit of fight and determination. Certainly the earlier rounds were superb football but not many teams can fight out a result and credit to Musselburgh for adding this to their game.
The club would like to thank the large crowd that game them a fantastic boost and hope that you will come up to Newtongrange to help us to more cup success. Well Done Musselburgh - BROWN CUP WINNERS 2007/08!
Follow Musselburgh for the last time this season as we head to Newtongrange to face Arniston Rangers in the Final of the St Micheals Cup. Arniston will be a tough game for us having had the edge in recent games, they also have been playing some good stuff recently beating super league Bonnyrigg to reach the final. The game is on Tuesday 10th June Kick Off is 7.15pm Bring a friend and help drive your local team to cup glory.
